Storage of patatoes: an example calculation
After harvesting, potatoes are stored for quite a lengthy period before they finally reach the consumer.
If the relative humidity is too low, the moisture will evaporate out of the potatoes, causing dehydration. As a result the weight of the potatoes will decrease, resulting in a lower yield.

The effect can be demonstrated through the use of an example calculation.
Starting points:
- storage of 1,000 ton of potatoes, at a temperature of 8°C.
- Price per Kg: € 0.10.
- Duration of storage: September through January
- Loss of weight in period September through December: 4%, followed by 0.5% per month.

The total loss of weight occurring during the period September through January is 0.045 x 1,000,000 = 45,000 Kg. At a price per Kg of € 0.10 this implies a loss of income of € 4,500.00!!

The payback time for a RELDAIR fog system is between 1 and 3 years, of course in relation to the quantity of potatoes in storage and the ambient conditions.
